The village of Bykivnia, situated near Kiev (capital city of Ukraine). People executed by the NKVD were buried here between 1936-1941, in Darnytsia Forest. The first victims, from Lukianivka Prison, were buried here in the late 1920s. Officially, the construction of a special zone for secret burials was started in 1936. From that time, victims of the Communist regime were secretly and systematically buried here.
The estimates stand at 30.000-100.000 victims, though some say the number is higher. A general accepted fact is that 100.000 is the minimum.
Items belongings to Polish officers were also found here. It was discovered they belonged to 1940 Katyn massacre victims, when 21.000 Polish officers were executed by NKVD.
